Well hello there.
Right! As I've mentioned, I'm going to AX (Anime Expo) in LA to be a dork and annoy [info]gaisce until she decides she should let me get killed in traffic. Clearly, it's going to be a pretty magical experience. Anyway, I'm leaving tomorrow at dark-thirty and getting back on...Monday? Maybe? I dunno, gmail isn't loading so I can't check my flight information. Whatever.

Anyway, I will see some of you there, and will probably fail to contact any of the rest of you in any way, except maybe through drunken text messages, because [info]uncreativity wants me to get drunk with her. Apparently I have some kind of reputation.

Ahaha no.
I'm back.

Real text message conversations from when I was gone.

[info]chash: Real business we just passed: Womb with a view
[info]darknightrain: O-Omg hahahaha. WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS WAS IT?
[info]chash: WE DON'T KNOW IT'S NOT LIKE WE WENT IN
[info]darknightrain: YOU SHOULD HAVE. YOU DON'T SEE WOMBS WITH A VIEW EVERYDAY. :(
[info]chash: I think knowing would make my life worse. But my mom says her friend told her about ultrasound parties, so she thinks it's that.
[info]darknightrain: ... O that'd make sense. IT'S STILL HILARIOUS WITHOUT CONTEXT, THOUGH.
[info]chash: I KNOW w-we pass it like every year and it's always kind of scarring ;;

[info]chash: I just said douche to my tiny cousins I should have more wine
[info]gaisce: gg Buffy
[info]chash: They started it

[info]chash: I definitely said douche to all my young cousins
[info]sninkle: Are you drunk?
[info]chash: Not very

[info]chash: Congratulations on the birth of your savior
Ben: U too xoxo
[info]chash: Ur mom love Jesus hurhurhur you suck
Ben: Are you drunk?
[info]chash: I would never & I resent your implication

OMG <3
So it's Mountain Day. That's pretty awesome. We went on the wussy non-hike, because hiking is orz and there's also a capella, which I loathe. It is a gorgeous day too.

[info]gaisce coming to visit has also evolved into a mini CFUD meetup, which is cool. [info]nightangelca and [info]windschaser will also be descending on my small dorm room, so go team us. Wacky antics will presumably be had by all.

We were made for being happy.
Life updates!

[info]gaisce is coming tomorrow \o/ This is very exciting.

Tomorrow might also be Mountain Day. Mountain Day is an exciting Williams tradition; basically, it's one of the first three Fridays of October, though we are not told which one until the day of. All classes on Mountain Day are canceled, and the college sponsors various hikes and outdoorsy activities intended to get us off our lazy asses. In theory, we aren't supposed to be able to predict when it is, but I think the chances of it being tomorrow are really, really high, because it's supposed to be nice weather, and it's possible there will never be another nice day. In the entirety of October. That happened sophomore year, when we had to default to third Friday because it rained every single day. That year sucked.

After that we have Reading Period, which is Monday and Tuesday off of classes. Which is why [info]gaisce is coming to visit in the first place. I also have no class Wednesday, so I am likely looking at a six-day weekend. /o/

Mature and responsible human being.
All right, class update.

So far, they seem pretty good! My Japanese has three people, which is a lot, and my reading is very rusty but hopefully it'll stop being so much soon. The fiction writing seems like it'll be lots of fun, and the timeslot (7 to 10 Monday night) could have been death but that should be okay.

I haven't had a proper meeting of Film Noir yet, but my classes will be very early, which is both a curse and a blessing--8:45 Friday is kind of extreme earliness, but I'll manage somehow. Similarly, I've only had one meeting for my Japanese Fiction course (I like that I'm taking Fiction, Japanese, and Japanese Fiction. Go team me), but it's Bolton so I'm not worried about it. This whole taking classes from profs I already know and like is crafty.

It feels like a lot more of the year has gone by than actually has, which is both good and bad. I often think it should be much later than it is, but then am both relieved and disappointed when it's not. Mostly relieved, except that the later it is, the sooner [info]gaisce gets here, and that's important. But mostly I guess it's okay.

I should talk about other things, but I've got The Wintersmith, and I'd rather read it.

I'm not a good person.

All full of the stupid.
At the advice of [info]gaisce, who, I suspect, is still angry with me for making her go to Superman Returns, I got Simply Irresistible. Which is a Sarah Michelle Gellar movie. That should probably tell you everything you need to know about the quality of the film. But I will be writing up commentary as I watch it, just in case you ever wanted to know even more about it. Here's the summary from the back, to get your mouths watering:

"Sarah Michelle Gellar (TV's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") "brings her bewitching charms to a tale of love" (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) in this seductive story of "hex" appeal.

"Beautiful restaurant owne Amanda Shelton (Gellar) is falling head over heels for handsome, hard-driving executive Tom Bartlett (Sean Patrick Flanery). Unfortunately, Tom is too busy to recognize that she's truly the girl of his dreams...until Amanda puts him under her tantalizing spell!"

Come with me, won't you! )

We're all captains baby.
Okay, so.  This is my final essay from my personal essay class, with some slight edits (mostly, I have replaced [info]gaisce's real person name with, well, [info]gaisce).  It is also probably not actually the final draft I would have liked, mostly because my cold is still kicking my ass, and ideally I would have edited the paper when, well, it wasn't.  Oh well.  Also, because I am too lazy to code my footnotes myself, I am updating in Rich text format, which is...really ew.  And I kind of hate it.  And I hopefully won't screw it up.  Anyway!

The essay under the cut is a rambly thing about comic books and me, although it is more about comic books than me.  It also contains some lies, although most of them can be summed up as "No, I don't want to explain how I actually met [info]gaisce" because I'm over the page requirement as it is, and while I'm sure that's a story my prof would be interested in reading, it's not one I'm actually interested in writing for her.

eta: In other news, I hate Rich Text mode and everything it stands for.  Discuss.

Chomp.
I personally feel that professors should always give stuff back at the beginning of classes. They claim that if they do (or at least, I have heard some claim this), the students are distracted by their grades for the rest of the class, but really, as long as I know it's coming back I'm usually distracted anyway. Case in point, we turned in outlines for a paper for my history class, and the prof talked about what he was looking for in them in the beginning of the class and then didn't give them back til the end, so I spent the entire class being convinced that I had screwed up horribly (as I do, go team me), only to discover at the end of the class that the prof was very positive about it.

Yesterday in Japanese Politics, I decided my notes should include, in addition to random drawings of angry cats, a list of the tangents that my prof went on during the course of the class:

-stared at his soda can for a few minutes in confusion before beginning a discussion about soda types
-the origin of the Long Island Ice tea
-badgered a student for liking The Last Samurai and therefore going against the side that historically won

I realize that despite having two shows I regularly watch now (Heroes and Veronica Mars), as well as several comics I follow (mostly Runaways and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane), I never really do fannish rambling on here. For Heroes, I vent my rage (which is almost always plentiful and directed towards Niki) at [info]gaisce in the form of an e-mail. I realized I could copy and paste this to my LJ, in the style of [info]green_queen's as it happens posts, but they're not actually that interesting, as evidenced in this excerpt, which is better than most:

"Sylar, just make Mohinder a friendship bracelet. It would get your point across, be less gay, and less creepy. La la la Tokugawa Shogunate."

Really, you should all just feel sorry for [info]gaisce, who has to receive them. As for Veronica Mars, I'm just not sure. But I'm pretty sure I'm more interested than I was in season two.
